Ethical Practices
The Glass Bakery: Environmental and Ethical Practices
REDUCE, REUSE AND SUPPORT NATURE
BIRDS WITH SMALL FEET
The Glass Bakery's studio policies and procedures reduce our environmental [bird track] footprint.
ENERGY USE - PASSIVE, SOLAR AND WOOL
The studio is passive heated by the Kiln, solar energy (windows) and natural wool (I wear a jumper)! I've been known to start work at less than 5C in the winter - it's pretty chilly in the glass studio until the kilns get hot! In the summer, there's no air conditioning - only windows!
Currently there are no electric lights turned on in the studio. Once the natural daylight fades, bird production halts!
The kilns run on "cleaner" Electric power rather than Propane.
RECYCLING
The studio recycles whenever possible.
Wholesale packaging makes use of repurposed newspapers, and pre-used boxes where available. Birds travel in recycled Kraft brown paper, card, corrugated card and paper wadding.
Minimal bubble wrap used and only to avoid waste from breakage. The wrap is "eco-friendly" with recycled content. All the packaging used is usually recyclable as part of household waste
REDUCING WASTE AND POLLUTION
There is no commercial glass recycling in Western Nova Scotia. The studio minimises waste raw material by creative thinking. Patterns are designed to make use of small pieces of glass.
Unbleached paper-based or cardboard protective packaging materials reduce environmental waste.
CRUELTY FREE
Cleaning products are all Cruelty Free and Environmentally Friendly brands.
Silicone polymer and paraffin wax preservative is great for helping to keep bark on logs. However, it's not so great for the environment. Since 2022, the studio has been using Hemp and other natural Oils as a preservative.
Natural Packaging
Retail packaging uses Kraft brown paper, paper wadding, corrugated card and natural fibres. Wood branding has replaced the vinyl stickers on bird perches since 2023!
