The Glass Bakery Birds
The birds are a collectable series of heart-warming characters crafted to capture your eye and imagination. Each bird has a personality, and is unique - simply and beautifully handcrafted from coloured glass with no paints, moulds or glazes.
Coloured Glass
Each bird is handcrafted from clear sheets of glass layered with coloured glass, not paints or glaze! All glass is cut by hand rather than poured into a mold. The colourful and patterned plumage is created using layers of crushed glass, giving each bird its distinct character.

Glass Powders and Frit
The coloured glass powder, also known as "frit," is applied to the clear glass bird shapes. Metal wire "legs" are sandwiched between layers of clear "sheet" glass. The birds are then placed in an electric kiln for fusing.

Kiln Firing Process
The kiln firing process takes at least 14 to 16 hours, plus additional cooling time. The kiln remains closed until the glass has completely cooled to room temperature.
After firing, hanging birds have a small hole carefully drilled in their head or neck using a diamond bit and water bath. The bird sun-catchers are threaded with discreet clear illusion cord.
I also initial each bird on the reverse side and brand the wood perches with a custom logo.
Birds Designs
I've made quite a number of birds over the last 10 years. Some designs are no longer in regular production or are only made as special firings. Here's a list of the birds created so far!
Barn Owl, Baltimore Oriole, Blackbird, Bluebird, Blue Jay, Cardinal (male and female), Cedar Waxwing, Chickadee, Crow, Eagle, Goldfinch (male and female), Red Winged Blackbird, Ruby Throated Hummingbird, Junco, Kingfisher (female and male, Rosey Faced Lovebird, Mallard, Red Breasted Nuthatch, Piping Plover, Puffin, Robin (North American and British) Sandpiper, Seagull, Steller's Jay, Tree Swallow, and Woodpecker
While I don’t take custom orders, I do keep a "wish list" of birds. Let me know if there’s a particular bird you’d love to see me create!
